Everything (by voidtools) is the default answer for instant filename search on Windows. PixaFind answers a different question: find files by meaning and photos by description, offline. What Everything is great at

Everything builds a filename and path database from the NTFS change journal. Type a few characters and results appear across entire volumes almost instantly. It is free (donationware), tiny, and trusted by power users for one job: find the file when you know (or half-know) its name.

It does not aim to understand document meaning or describe photos. Judging it for semantic search would be unfair.

What PixaFind is great at

PixaFind indexes file contents and images into local embeddings so you can search by concept (“vendor liability,” “sunset over the factory”) even when filenames are useless. Models run on your hardware; files are not uploaded for search.

The tradeoff is real: first indexing takes longer and uses more disk/RAM than Everything’s lightweight name database. For pure “where is invoice-acme.pdf?” Everything remains faster.

Who should use which

  • Choose Everything if your daily pain is slow Windows Search for known names and paths.
  • Choose PixaFind if your daily pain is forgotten names, paraphrased topics, or finding photos by description — and you want that offline.
  • Use both if you want instant names and meaning search. They overlap little.
